John Anthony Capo, (1948 – 2008)

In Memoriam

A founding partner of Capo Sgro LLP, John dedicated his career to obtaining access to justice for his clients and his community. He was a true leader with a genuine passion for the practice of law, and was a strong advocate for his clients. One of the highpoints of his career included the prominent role he played in the Meech Lake Accord and the Charlottetown Accord. He was also a key figure in the joint National Redress Committee in 1992 for Italian-Canadian internees during WWII.

Outside of his work at the firm, John dedicated a great deal of his time to the community. He was the founder and first President of the Italian Club at Erindale College (U of T), founder and first President of the Canadian Italian Advocates Organization (CIAO), President of Villa Colombo, President of St. Michael's College Parents' Association, as well as a Director of Villa Charities and COSTI, a member of the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIPBA) and the Canadian Bar Association. For many years he also donated his time and expertise to a weekly legal affairs program for CHIN Radio.

During his lifetime, John was the proud and well-deserved recipient of many awards and honours, including the Italian Canadian Benevolent Corporation’s President’s Award, the CIAO Award of Excellence and the Villa Charities Heart and Hand award. In addition to these distinctions, John, a member of the Knights of Columbus, was also knighted. After his passing, John was futher recognized and honoured by many organizations for being an outstanding member of his community and his profession.

John A. Capo is, and will continue to be, greatly missed by his family, colleagues, clients and friends.
